After over six decades of providing housing for UC Davis students and their families, the Solano Park apartment complex will begin demolition in October 2024. 

History

Built in 1962, Solano Park once served as housing for international students, graduate students, and student families seeking living arrangements close to campus. As the buildings aged, it was time to evaluate the long term viability of the neighborhood. After a Facility Condition Assessment, it became evident that the complex needed to be decommissioned. The property officially closed in September 2023. Continuing residents were provided relocation options and support from a third-party consultant who specializes in these efforts. 

Schedule

The demolition of Solano Park will occur in two phases. Building abatement, which involves safely removing hazardous materials like asbestos, began in September 2024. Structural demolition will follow, starting mid-October, with the project expected to be fully completed by Spring 2025. Post demolition, the entire 15-acre site will be seeded with a California native grass mix while a portion at the northern end will be fenced off to protect the land.

Scope

UC Davis Design and Construction Management is leading the project with a focus on sustainability. Wherever possible, materials from the demolished buildings—such as concrete, metal, and wood—will be sorted and recycled. Additionally, UC Davis Campus Planning and Environmental Stewardship is taking steps to protect the area's environmental and cultural resources, ensuring that all necessary safeguards are in place and that the demolition follows strict standards for minimizing dust, noise, and other disruptions to the surrounding community.
