About this Project

To safely accommodate the increasing number of cars, bikes and pedestrians going to and from the campus’s expanding Gateway District, this project — majority-funded by the Federal Highway Administration — replaces a 32-foot-wide, almost- 70-year-old bridge with a seismically safe 52-foot-wide span that includes standard sidewalks and bike lanes. The project also relocates utility lines and facilitates multiple improvements to the Arboretum including safer, accessible path connections and irrigation upgrades.

Throughout construction, cars and bikes can cross the waterway in both directions. Where portions of the Arboretum are closed, visitors will find detours.
